Ajman University, represented by the Office of Sustainability, participated in the Sustainability Symposium organized by Heriot Watt University in Dubai under the theme: "Expo 2020 Legacy: Towards COP and Beyond." The symposium took place on January 26, 2023, with the aim of exchanging experiences, embracing knowledge, and deriving valuable lessons on how Expo 2020 contributes to enhancing sustainable development. The symposium hosted prominent government and private institutions, international organizations, and experts who play a pivotal role in the field of environmental sustainability.
The symposium commenced with its first panel titled: "Expo 2020 Vision and Strategy." During this panel, the design of Expo 2020 was discussed, as each aspect of Expo 2020 Dubai was designed to achieve the three sustainability goals. These goals involve integrating sustainability into all aspects, from design and construction to events and daily management, extending to the post-Expo phase known as "District 2020," which is a smart and sustainable business district where the future is crafted. It attracts global companies. Additionally, the planning and design of Expo 2020 were aligned with Dubai's main urban plan for 2040, aiming to enhance environmental sustainability, develop vibrant and healthy communities, and increase recreational green spaces and parks to provide a healthy environment for residents and visitors.
"Learning from Expo 2020 Dubai Sustainability Pioneers" was the title of the second panel of the symposium, in which the scientific effects brought about by Expo 2020 were elucidated as a result of what was hosted and presented in the sustainability pavilion. The role it played in inspiring Expo 2020 visitors to care for the environment through sharing various countries' strategies, innovations, and solutions was highlighted. These efforts have a positive impact on protecting our planet and creating a sustainable future for everyone.
In the final panel of the symposium, titled "Legacy Beyond Expo 2020 and Towards COP28," the discussion revolved around the legacy left by Expo 2020 and its role in supporting the COP28 conference. This conference focuses on climate change as a global issue that requires international and local solutions. The hosting of this conference provides an opportunity for all segments of society to engage in promoting environmental awareness, climate action, and working towards achieving various strategic partnerships. These efforts aim to fulfill the goals of the United Arab Emirates related to the strategic initiative of climate neutrality by 2050.
Ajman University's participation in the Sustainability Conference aligns with its support for the Year of Sustainability 2023, as announced by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the UAE, under the slogan "Today for Tomorrow." This also reinforces the university's role in supporting student capacity building and enhancing their environmental awareness, contributing to the support and achievement of the strategic directions set by the university in relation to climate and sustainability for the period from 2022 to 2030.
Furthermore, Ajman University's Office of Sustainability always aims to empower students and expand their perspectives and experiences on how to make the world more sustainable. It encourages them towards innovation, creativity, and providing exceptional, innovative solutions that help everyone face the negative impacts of climate change.
